Voltage Dividers and Network Resistors

1. Voltage Dividers

  • Applications:

    • Sensing and Measurement: Voltage dividers are commonly used in sensor circuits. For instance, in a temperature - sensing circuit using a thermistor (a temperature - sensitive resistor), the thermistor can be part of a voltage divider. As the temperature changes, the resistance of the thermistor changes, which in turn changes the output voltage of the voltage divider. This output voltage can then be measured and used to determine the temperature.

    • Biasing in Electronic Devices: In transistor circuits, voltage dividers are used to set the biasing voltages. By properly dividing the supply voltage, the correct operating point (also known as the quiescent point) of the transistor can be established. This ensures that the transistor operates in the desired region (such as the active region for amplification) and provides stable and predictable performance.

2. Network Resistors

    • Resistor networks can also be a combination of series and parallel connections. To find the equivalent resistance of such a complex network, we need to simplify the circuit step - by - step by first identifying and simplifying smaller series or parallel sub - networks.

  • Applications:

    • Current Limiting and Voltage Regulation: In power supply circuits, resistor networks can be used to limit the current flowing through a particular component. By placing a series - connected resistor network between the power source and the load, the current can be controlled according to the resistance values. Resistor networks can also be used in voltage - regulation circuits. For example, in a simple Zener diode voltage - regulator circuit, a series - parallel resistor network is used to set the output voltage and limit the current through the Zener diode.

    • Impedance Matching: In electronic communication systems, such as in radio frequency (RF) circuits, impedance matching is crucial for efficient power transfer between different components or stages. Resistor networks can be designed to match the input impedance of a device to the output impedance of another device. This helps to minimize signal reflection and maximize power transfer, improving the overall performance of the communication system.
